Some of the most meaningful contributions nurses make are also among the hardest to measure.

Now, a UC Davis clinical nurse scientist is helping lead a national effort to better define nursing’s impact on patients and families.

Lori S. Kennedy, director of the Center for Nursing Science at UC Davis Health, has published a new framework Oct. 19 in JAMA Internal Medicine that identifies nine domains of nursing practice and proposes new ways to measure nurses’ contributions to patient outcomes.

By appearing in one of the nation’s leading physician journals, the Viewpoint article brings the conversation to doctors, health system leaders and policymakers whose decisions help shape how quality of care is measured and evaluated. In addition to her leadership role, Kennedy is also an associate professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis.
